Learn to treat conflict as a game of understanding
Not all conflict needs to be a battle to win. Conflict can also be a game of understanding.
Too often, we treat all conflict the same like a zero-sum contest—winners and losers, right and wrong.
And in some contexts this may be appropriate, but in creative conflicts of ideas and choices it’s not the best approach.
Shifting to focus on understanding, on the other hand, reframes the game. Instead of fighting to be heard, we listen to uncover what is hidden and needs to be found.
Instead of defending our position, we explore the reasons behind it—and theirs.
Understanding isn’t about agreeing. It’s about seeing. The moment we shift from “I’m right” to “help me see what you mean and why its important to you,” conflict can shift to become collaboration.
Innovation always involves some form of creative conflict. Sustainable solutions emerge not from conquest but from clarity.
The goal isn’t to avoid conflict, it’s to transform it.
Of course, not all conflicts can be resolved through understanding—some require firm boundaries or decisive resolution.
But in contexts where ideas and collaboration are at stake, trading winning for understanding transforms resistance into progress.
And that’s the real victory.
